About the project
In 2021, the Gold Coast Waterways Authority improved navigational access to Gold Coast waterways by dredging the Gold Coast Seaway entrance and the adjacent north and south Channels. The dredged sand was placed nearshore for beach nourishment of Gold Coast beaches.
The benefits of this $6.3 million project included:
- Improved safety for small and medium sized vessels, crossing the Gold Coast Seaway bar
- Removal of shoaling in the north and south Channels to improve access for larger vessels to the local marine industry hubs at Coomera and in the southern Broadwater
- Continued support for marine industries and people who rely on waterways access for their livelihoods
- Coastal protection through sand placement off Narrowneck beach, with an exclusion zone around the artificial reef.
Dredging volume
The Gold Coast Seaway, north and south channel dredging project had a dredging volume of 420,000 m3.
